Statement to Our Brothers from the Alawite Sect

In the Workshop on the Criminalization of Sectarianism and Safeguarding National Unity

يا أبناء شعبنا السوري، يا إخوتنا الكرام أبناء الطائفة العلوية الكريمة:

إننا من منطلق الشعور بالمسؤولية الوطنية وانطلاقا من مبادئنا الإسلامية السمحة نرى لزما

We must address you on behalf of the Sunni community in Syria, in full view and hearing of the entire world, and we declare the following:
The regime in Syria is not that of a particular sect; rather, it is the regime of those who have chosen to serve the ruling family that has seized power.
The ruling regime for the past forty years has fueled sectarianism in the country, relying on convincing a segment of the minorities that its presence is their protector, and that its absence would expose them to persecution and annihilation.
We affirm the unity of the Syrian people, and that every sect in Syria is part of the overall fabric of the Syrian population. The history of Syria bears witness to the coexistence and harmony among all its sects.
The regime has proven through its irresponsible practices that it has equated in its oppression all the sons of Syria. Opponents from the honorable Alawite sect have suffered harm and mistreatment equal to, or perhaps even more severe than, that endured by other honorable opponents from the Syrian people.
As we recall with much sorrow and pain the events of the 1980s, we reaffirm our condemnation of all sectarian practices that took place at that time, regardless of the party responsible.
We declare our innocence and reaffirm our rejection of any sectarian practices that may be caused by some malicious individuals in our people's current peaceful revolution.
We call upon our honorable brothers from the patriotic Alawite sect to join the blessed revolution of the people and participate in the noble mission of liberating the nation from the claws of tyranny.
سنبقى بعد سقوط النظام أبناء شعب واحد كما كنا دائماً، ونعلن بوضوح أننا نرفض وندين ونحارب أي مسلك انتقامي، ولن يتم إتهام أو إدانة أحد على أساس الطائفة أو المذهب أو الدين، والقانون العادل الحر المحايد هو الذي يتولى القضاء على المظالم والانتهاكات التي وقعت.
Syria will return as a homeland for all its citizens, where they will be equal in rights and duties, working hand in hand to build a free, democratic, independent, and unified nation.
